Thanks for the info. The scan rate was set to 2 mins & I changed it to 5. It looks to have changed to randomly checking 'location' to 1 to 2 minutes. Better than every 15 seconds as it was before.

Can't see how to do that, there's no option under SSID on / out of range that I can see. Please can you explain? Thanks

Yes, I think this feature will probably require root. But that was also the case with Airplane Mode at one point, so I remain hopeful.

I looked around on the forum for posts about this a fair bit before posting here but obviously missed them. It's a wishful thought, but it seems that there are quite a few device dependent possibilities in system settings so thought I'd mention it just in case.
