After Sunset/Before Sunrise, what is the difference?

I am having trouble with these triggers?

In my mind after sunset means between sunset and midnight, and before sunrise means between midnight and sunrise.

I have tried to use both these constraints on a macro but they seem to cancel each other out. Can anyone expand a little on them and how they work as it's clear they can't be used together on the same trigger as I wanted.

Sunset trigger can be configured to fire at sunset, or a given duration before sunset, or a given duration after sunset.

Sunrise trigger can be configured to fire at sunrise, or a given duration before sunrise, or a given duration after sunrise.
