SOLUTION 1.
You do not understand it right. It still should lock your screen, but you are able to unlock it with fingerprint, face unlock etc...
Lock screen means that if you want to unlock screen after MacroDroid locked it you need to write password and can't use fingerprint, face recognition etc...

SOLUTION 2.
That's because MacroDroid used device administrator permission instead of accessibility service to turn screen off. Try enabling accessibilty for MacroDroid in settings. Also what's your android version? I think that if you are lower than android 8, MacroDroid than can't use accessibility to turn the screen off and uses administrator instead which cause phone wanting password to unlock.
